A US golfing equipment manufacturer decided to explore the possibility of entering the Japanese market. They have arranged a meeting with a major Japanese firm to discuss a joint venture. The representatives of each firm meet up in San Francisco. Following the initial introductions the men sat down at opposite sides of the table. After offering their Japanese guests a drink the US representatives proceeded to take off their jackets and roll up their sleeves as sign of “let’s get down to business.” The meeting was unsuccessful and the joint venture never took place.
What cultural Faux pas did the Americans make?
A、The American people seem so informal that the Japanese businessmen don't think they are reliable.
B、In Japan, people tend to sit around a round table instead of opposite to each other when they are talking so as to show politeness, while in America this is common and does not carry any sense of disrespect.
C、It is considered rude by Japanese to take off jackets and roll up sleeves during a discussion; Japanese people would keep the formal wear in order to show respect. However, in the U.S. this is a sign of starting the work.
D、Many Japanese business people value the establishment of interpersonal relations at the beginning of the business; they’d rather get to know each other’s personal backgrounds before talking about business, which is also ignored by the American representatives.
