问答题Task 5
Directions: The following is a
preface of a book. After reading it, you should give brief answers to the 5
questions (No. 56 through No. 60) that follow. The answers should be no
more than 3 words. They should be written after the corresponding numbers on the
Answer Sheet.
This practice book is intended for foreign engineers or
students of engineering who have already mastered the elements of English, and
who now want to use their knowledge of the language to read books on their own
subjects. Readers should understand, however, that the purpose of the book is to
teach language, not to teach engineering.
The language in which
scientific and technical facts are expressed is certainly not a different
language from that of everyday life, but all the same it presents the foreign
student with a number of special problems. The most obvious and the most widely
recognized of these problems is the vocabulary. One of the aims of this practice
book is to present as many technical words as possible, and as often as possible
: words such as work and pain and load and feed and force. Words like these look
harmless, but they can cause a lot of trouble to the student.
But more than anything else, I have tried to describe the technical
statement; that is, the completed sentence rather than the individual word. Many
of the structures illustrated in the book are essential to the expression of
technical facts and ideas-at least for the present.

outline below it ( No. 46 through No. 50). You should write your answers briefly
( in no more than 3 words) on the Answer Sheet correspondingly.
The construction of the White House began in 1792, but it was

The second president, John Adams, was the first to live in the White
House. When he and his wife moved into the new two-story house in November,
1800, construction work was still going on, although the main area was
completed. Work was not finished until the administration of the third
president, Thomas Jefferson.
Twelve years later, the British
army invaded Washington and burned the White House. Later on workers rebuilt it.
None of the work, however, changed the apearance of the building.

单项选择题Task 2
Directions: This task is the same
as Task 1. The 5 questions or unfinished statements are numbered 41
through 45.
Einstein had a great effect on science
and history. An American university president once commented that Einstein had
created a new outlook, a new view of universe. It may be some time before the
average mind understands fully the identity of time and space and so on-but even
ordinary men understand now that the universe is something larger than ever
thought before.
By 1914 the young Einstein had gained world
fame. He accepted the offer to become a professor at the Prussian Academy of
Science in Berlin. He had few duties, little teaching and unlimited
opportunities for study, but soon his peace and quiet were broken by the First
World War.
Einstein hated violence. The misery of war affected
him deeply, and he sat unhappy in his office doing little. He lost interest in
his research. Only when peace came in 1918 was he able to get back to
work.
In the years following World War I honors were
increasingly heaped on him. He became the head of the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute
of Theoretical Physics. In 1921 he won the Nobel Prize, and he was honored in
Germany until the rise of Naziism when he was driven from Germany because he was
a Jew.
A.everyone understands Einstein’s theory today
B.the theory of relativity can be quickly learned by everyone
C.Einstein achieved more than any other scientist in history
D.our ideas about the universe are different today because of Einstein

Directions: This part is to test your reading ability.
There are 5 tasks for you to fulfil. You should read the reading materials
carefully and do the tasks as you are instructed.
Task
1
Directions :After reading the following
passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36 through
40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A), B), C) or D).
You should make the correct choice and mark the corresponding letter on the
Answer Sheet with a single line through the centre.
Acting is such an over-crowded
profession that the only advice that should be given to a young person thinking
of going on the stage is "Don’t" ! But it is useless to try to discourage
someone who feels that he must act, although the chances of his becoming famous
are slim. The normal way to begin is to go to a drama school. Then the young
actor or actress takes up work with a theatrical company, usually as an
assistant stage manager. This means doing everything that there is to do in the
theatre: painting scenery, publicity (宣传 ), taking care of the costumes (舞台服装),
and even acting in very small parts. It is very hard work indeed. The hours are
long and the salary is tiny.
Of course, some people have
remarkable chances which lead to fame and success without this long and hard
training. Connie Pratt, for example, was just an ordinary girl working in a
bicycle factory. A film producer happened to catch sight of her one morning
waiting at a bus stop, as he drove past in his car. He stopped and asked if she
would like to go to the film studio to do a test, and she thought he was joking.
It took the producer twenty minutes to convince Connie that he was serious. The
test was successful. And within a few weeks she was playing the leading part
opposite one of the most famous actors of the day. But chances like this happen
once in a blue moon!
A.as famous as the greatest actor of the world
B.playing the leading female role in a play
C.no less famous than the leading actor of the day
D.the most famous actress of the world
